How the Center works
The San Francisco Elder Abuse Forensic Center creates a public/private partnership that is housed in the Department of Aging and Adult Services and includes:
- Adult Protective Services
- Public Guardian
- District Attorney (prosecutors, elder abuse specialists, and victim services),
- Police Department (Police Inspectors, fraud and domestic violence specialists)
- Institute on Aging - Geriatric Assessment Center and Elder Abuse Prevention Program
- a board-certified Geriatrician
The Center co-locates experts from each of these agencies crucial to managing elder abuse cases, and provides the venue and mechanism for rapid and efficient collaboration.
By working closely together, they better understand, identify, and treat elder abuse, and determine more effective ways to ensure successful prosecution of elder abuse cases.
The team provides multi-agency case reviews and action plans, and conducts in-home medical and mental status evaluations, evidentiary investigation and multi-disciplinary consultation.
The team’s goal is always to enhance the safety and well-being of the elder, and to prevent future abuse.
The Elder Abuse Forensic Center partners held their first case review process on January 15, 2008 and have already been presented with many cases that received immediate response.
